Is luck a skill?” – an unexpected question from the Chairman during the early-week meeting opened up fresh perspectives and insights, guiding young team members in shaping their professional mindset and the journey of building Vu Phong Energy Group’s position and legacy.
A Unique Onboarding Experience: Cultivating a Leadership and Growth Mindset
Monday, December 8th. As the busy rhythm of a new work week began, an unexpected announcement arrived for new hires at Vu Phong Energy Group. Instead of elaborate presentations or thick binders, the meeting was simply announced: A meeting with Chairman Pham Nam Phong.
Entering the meeting room – connected via livestream to Hanoi, Da Nang, and Binh Duong – Chairman Phong greeted everyone with his characteristic warm smile and poised demeanor. He took the time to shake each person’s hand, looking at each new employee as a welcome to the company family.
“Today, I’m taking the opportunity to help you understand Vu Phong Energy Group better, its history, and the journey we’re building together,” he began, easing the usual reserve often felt between new employees and senior leadership. This created an immediate connection and laid the groundwork for fostering a leadership mindset development.
For those present, it wasn’t just a meeting; it was a second, unique “Onboarding Experience.” It was a chance to hear directly from the company’s leader about the journey of Vietnam’s leading renewable energy company, and its continued growth.
From Small Workshop to a Global Vision: Cultivating a Leadership and Growth Mindset
Let’s rewind to 2009. With a thoughtful and measured tone, Phong recounts the story of Vu Phong’s journey from its humble beginnings. Starting as a small equipment manufacturer, Vu Phong persistently evolved into a small contractor, then a larger Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firm, and now operates as a professional project developer and investor.
Each step in this evolution wasn’t merely a change in scale, but a fundamental shift in mindset. He shares the challenges faced by those who blaze new trails, and how a Vietnamese company can remain resilience and lead the way in a technically demanding industry like renewable energy. A strong leadership mindset development and growth mindset is key to this transformation.
Phong’s commitment extends beyond internal narratives, with his spirit of “pioneering” and “mastery” clearly demonstrated by how he shares value with the member units within the Vu Phong ecosystem. A prime example is the story at Vietnam Construction Joint Stock Company 47 (C47) – an affiliated company of Vu Phong Energy Group.
Setting the Stage for International Ventures: A Leadership Perspective
When C47 embarked on its first international hydropower project in Laos, even as a subcontractor, Phong established a distinct mindset for the team:
“Regardless of our role as a subcontractor, our mindset should always be that of the General Contractor, the Prime Contractor. We need to approach the work with comprehensive oversight and the highest level of responsibility.”
That’s the hallmark of a leadership mindset development. During project implementation, he consistently went to the construction site, enduring challenging roads and border conditions, to work alongside the technical team – sharing meals, sleep, and firsthand experiences. His goal was to gain a complete understanding of every phase of construction, to truly empathize with the challenges faced by the workers and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the entire team.
One particularly poignant moment, which moved the entire audience, was when he recounted a celebration at the construction site. He organized a lavish feast within the camp to invite the
The Formula for Success: Ability + Effort + Belief = Opportunity
A palpable silence fell over the meeting room when the Chairman unexpectedly posed a thought-provoking question: “What do you think, is luck a matter of ability?”
Most attendees nodded in agreement. He then led the discussion deeper, asking, “So, how do you transform luck into ability?”
That’s a question his former general contractor supervisor had once asked him on a construction site. The younger employees began to contemplate, their minds racing to find the answer. A Gen Z intern bravely responded, “It’s Belief.” The Chairman smiled with satisfaction and articulated his personal formula for success:
Luck = Competency + Effort + Belief
He shared sincerely, “I’ve always believed that when you’ve developed a solid foundation of ability, apply relentless effort, and maintain unwavering belief in the path you’ve chosen, you will be rewarded and achieve success. The outcome is simply a matter of time, as long as you don’t give up. Cultivating growth is essential.”
This philosophy has guided him through every turn in his life. From the bold decision to leave a prestigious marketing director position at a Danish corporation to pursue entrepreneurship, to the high-risk commitments he’s made in business, a leadership mindset development has been the key.
The Modern Workforce Profile: Conceptual, Technical, and Human Skills
According to Phong, a leader at Vu Phong, we’re not simply seeking skilled workers; we’re searching for well-rounded collaborators. He highlighted three core competencies crucial for evaluating personnel, particularly within management roles, and demonstrating the power of a leadership mindset development.
- Conceptual Ability: The capacity to grasp the big picture, understand strategy, and align with overall direction. This is a critical element of a leadership mindset development, enabling individuals to see beyond immediate tasks.
- Technical Ability: Expertise and precision in one’s field – a sharp, accurate understanding of the technical aspects of the role.
- Human Ability: The ability to empathize, connect, and effectively lead teams. This vital skill often distinguishes those with a leadership mindset development.
These three abilities serve as a guiding principle, encouraging every Vu Phong employee to continually self-assess and strive for improvement, fostering growth and continuous development.
Preparing for Opportunities Yet to Come
At the end of the presentation, a Gen Z team member posed a question many of us likely shared: “How did you proactively plan your career to achieve significant advancements?”
The response offered a valuable lesson in readiness: “You can’t predict what tomorrow holds; you can only focus on doing your best in the present.”
Few realize that this poised leader once pursued two bachelor’s degrees simultaneously, completed a master’s program while working, and ascended to the role of Marketing Director despite starting as an engineer. He didn’t wait for opportunities to arrive before starting to learn; instead, he consistently invested in himself each day, ensuring he was prepared to seize them with a winning mindset—a core component of a strong leadership mindset development leadership mindset development, fueled by resilience, and sustainable growth.
As the meeting concluded, the new team members left not only with knowledge of the company’s history but also with valuable insights and experiences gleaned from the discussion.
The story of Phạm Nam Phong and Vũ Phong Energy Group is a testament to our commitment: We don’t just build energy infrastructure; we cultivate individuals with a proactive, ethical, and bold approach to their work. This story will continue to be written by the young professionals now joining our “keeping the sun shining” team.
