Reducing your carbon footprint is no longer just a buzzword – it’s a vital step towards a healthier planet for all of us. As the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) highlights in their 2024 Earth Hour campaign, achieving Net Zero isn’t some distant dream; it’s a journey we must actively embrace. Join millions around the globe in switching off and dedicating an hour to our planet on March 23rd, and discover simple yet impactful ways to contribute to a greener future. Learn how you can make a difference, one step at a time.
“Reducing Carbon footprint towards Net Zero” is the theme launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) for the 2024 Earth Hour Campaign, observed from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 23, 2024.
Originating as a “lights out” event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, Earth Hour – an initiative of WWF – has evolved into a global annual movement dedicated to environmental conservation. For the 18th year, on March 23, 2024, individuals, businesses, and communities worldwide will participate by “Switching off and Giving an hour for Earth,” taking meaningful action for our planet.
The 2024 Earth Hour campaign highlights the vital role of reducing our carbon footprint in the journey towards Net Zero. This message underscores the need for countries to transition to a green economy, embrace circular economy principles, promote sustainable development using nature-based solutions, expand biodiversity corridors and conservation areas, reduce emissions, adopt renewable energy sources across various sectors, and develop innovative scientific and technological solutions to minimize the pressure on our natural environment.
Document No. 1221/BTNMT-TTTT (dated February 28, 2024), issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, guides activities in response to World Water Day, World Meteorological Day, and the 2024 Earth Hour Campaign. It also emphasizes Vietnam’s commitment to demonstrating its responsibility and efforts at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) to achieve the Net Zero goal by 2050.
In conjunction with the 2024 Earth Hour campaign, the Ministry of Industry and Trade introduced the message “Save Electricity – Become a Habit” to encourage ongoing energy conservation, not just for one hour, but as a consistent practice for individuals, communities, and businesses throughout the year. This aligns with Directive No. 20/CT-TTg of the Prime Minister (issued June 8, 2023) on enhancing electricity saving efforts for 2023-2025 and beyond.

Directive No. 20/CT-TTg mandates a national effort to save at least 2.0% of total electricity consumption annually from 2023 to 2025 and beyond. The goal also includes reducing electricity losses within the power system to below 6% by 2025 and striving for 50% of office buildings and 50% of households to utilize rooftop solar power by 2030. Further measures include reducing peak load capacity by at least 1,500 MW by 2025 through Demand Side Management (DSM) and Demand Response (DR) programs, and transitioning 100% of street lighting to LED technology by the end of 2025.
To achieve these objectives, all organizations and individuals are urged to actively implement electricity-saving measures. These include installing and utilizing rooftop solar power systems and solar water heating systems in offices, encouraging rooftop solar power systems and solar water heating in households, and supporting businesses in implementing energy-efficient solutions, integrating renewable energy sources, and prioritizing energy-efficient devices.
