REQUIREMENTS FOR EMISSIONS REDUCTION - SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has officially entered its transition phase (October 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025)
Iron & Steel is one of the first six sectors to be impacted by the CBAM during the first phase, including Cement, Iron and Steel, Aluminium, Fertilizers, Hydrogen, and Electricity.
In the transition phase, importers must report the amount of goods affected by CBAM and the corresponding emissions, including direct and indirect emissions (from electricity consumption in production).
In addition to the CBAM mechanism, there are several other mechanisms and policies related to emission reduction and sustainable development, such as the draft Clean Competition Act (CCA) in the United States; the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) of the EU; green standards in new-generation FTAs…”

Noticeable, Vietnam steel sector:

- The average emission are approximately 2.51 tons of CO2 per ton of raw steel (compared to the global average of 1.85 tons of CO2 per ton of raw steel).*

- An average electricity consumption of about 400-600 kWh per ton of steel, the amount of emissions from electricity consumed if taken from the national grid for 1,000 tons of steel emissions can reach approximately 288-433 tCO2.
