On March 28, 2024, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) hosted a significant event aimed at engaging with the city’s innovation and creativity community. Key attendees included Pham Nam Phong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vu Phong Energy Group, alongside experts who shared ideas to solidify HCMC’s position as a leading innovation and entrepreneurship hub with regional and continental influence.

The meeting was also attended by Nguyen Van Nen, Member of the Politburo and Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee; Phan Van Mai, Member of the Party Central Committee and Chairman of the HCMC Municipal People’s Committee; and leaders of various departments and sectors, in addition to approximately 30 renowned experts and innovative entrepreneurs from Vietnam and HCMC.

Chairman Mai emphasized HCMC’s ambition to become a leading innovation and entrepreneurship center, building upon its existing foundation as a regional science and technology hub in ASEAN, with a vision to expand its reach continentally by 2030. He expressed hope that the innovation community will continue to support the city’s development and contribute to the creation of effective strategies, policies, and a thriving ecosystem.

The Chairman underscored the importance of listening to and incorporating input from the innovation and creative community to guide HCMC’s strategic focus and investment decisions, ultimately fostering a robust startup ecosystem and enhancing its regional and international competitiveness.

Phong highlighted that embracing green energy solutions and fostering green transportation present significant opportunities for innovation, aligning with HCMC and the nation’s commitments to reduce emissions and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. He noted the need for supporting infrastructure – including electricity sources, transmission grids, and charging station networks – along with necessary financial resources. He suggested leveraging mechanisms like the JETP and attracting both domestic and international strategic investors to facilitate this transition.

Beyond Phong’s presentation on renewable energy and green transportation, experts and startup founders offered valuable ideas and solutions to city leaders. These discussions included promoting e-commerce models for small and medium-sized enterprises and traditional markets, securing investment for startups, establishing supportive legal frameworks, and attracting green finance and strategic investors.
HCMC holds a significant position as a vital urban center and a key driver of Vietnam’s economy, culture, education, science, technology, and international integration. Its startup and innovation ecosystem is considered the most dynamic in the country, accounting for 50% of startups, 40% of incubators and support facilities, 44% of investment capital, and 60% of business deals nationwide. HCMC also stands out as the first locality to implement special policies specifically designed to foster startup and innovation initiatives.
